What's the best way to approach getting a diamond ring cleaned and inspected?

I've been married for 15 years and have a beautiful diamond engagement ring. I want to leave it at a jeweler for cleaning and inspection. However, I know nothing about diamonds, and it occurred to me that it would be really easy for someone to switch diamonds on me without my knowledge. Is this a legitimate concern, or should I just trust a reputable jeweler? And suggestions?|||Take it to a jeweler cleaner.
