How to get the best diamond for your money?

When shopping for a diamond engagement ring, what do you need to know to get the best quality diamond for your money?|||To get the best quality stone for your money, educate yourself! Learn the basics of diamonds, the 4Cs, and remember that the most important of the Cs is CUT - please folks, cut does not refer to the shape of the diamond, it refers to the proportions of the stone.

A well cut stone reflects light better, creating the sparkle and fire that is the hallmark of a beautiful diamond. A poorly cut one looks "dead", it has little fire and color play, and tends to look kind of like an old CZ...

So, go to an independent jeweler, not a chain or mall store. Tell them what you *think* you're looking for, and let them find the best match for your money!

Good Luck!|||You need to know that they probably acquired that diamond unfairly and there was probably blood shed in the process of getting it.. I think buying diamonds are morally wrong.|||jewelers sell the 4C's

cut- shape of the diamond

color-clear starts at the letter D and goes all the way thru Z(dark and brown)

caret weight-the size of the diamond

clarity-this is how the diamond looks. VVS1-I3. The order is VVS1 or 2 then SI 1 or 2 then I 1,2, or 3. (VVS means very small inclusions (carbon spots) that cannot be seen thru the nakes eye-Slight inclusion means that there is something that can be seen but normally still hard to tell its there. the I--normally, when the carbon turns into a diamond -the carbon does not always form it can be a small black dot or it can look more like a white feather,.

Just remember-there is no perfect diamond!!!!

My suggestion would be go to an individual person not a chain and not in a mall. They have higher mark ups and they get what is bought for them by some purchaser who gets them in quanity. A smaller jewelry store or jeweler can take more time and probally has more training also.

Dont be afraid to ask questions.Make them show it to you thru a microscope so you can see everything in the diamond and have them use a tool that beeps when it touches a real diamond. I myself wouldn't pay over 4,000 for a SI one caret diamond. Shop around and compare prices and try to find one that has a GIA certification..... Oh and remember the prongs that hold the diamond in the mounting---10 is stronger than 14kt and white prongs are stronger than yellow.|||4 Cs is the most important. You can sacrifice on the size of your diamond but not its quality. So it would be adviseable to learn about the 4 Cs before you actually head towards shopping. Another thing that I would recommend to look for is the certification of diamonds which is equally important! Withiut a valid certification, diamonds are worthless. If you want to know more about the 4Cs or the certification of diamonds, visit http://www.b2cjewels.com/education.aspx

Can I trade Pokemon from Diamond to HeartGold as SOON as I start my adventure?

Basically, I have a DS, and my sister has a DS. In one game I'll load HeartGold, and then I'll load up Diamond. Can I trade pokemon between versions before I get the National Dex?

Hopefully somebody who already has done this with a Japenese version can confirm my question.

Thank you.|||Yes you can, but you will first need to obtain the Johto dex [which you get at the beginning of the game] then you can trade

What is so wrong about proposing with a ring that isnt a diamond?

is it not what the ring represents?

some of the "fake diamond" rings are beautiful and less expensive.

What is it about people that HAVE to have a diamond?|||there's no problem with that the ring symbolizes love and it doesnt matter what you can afford bc love doesnt have a price .|||um i love care at least that person love me

|||LOL, I was proposed to over breakfast--no diamond, no ring.

That was 10 years ago...|||IT WILL LOOK FAKE! |||A Girl needs a Diamond Ring OK specially if its an engagement Ring, by proposing with a fake ring you give her the feeling of being cheap and not worthy of a diamond ring. VERY BAD IDEA DUDE|||There's nothing wrong with it, if that's what your bride to be will accept. For me, a diamond was the only way to go, but for other women, they would accept CZ, pearl, birthstone, a stone that means something to each other, ect... Many brides today are chosing to go the untraditional route. Definately get her take on it first, don't just spring a fake ring on her and expect her to just accept it.|||cause it goes against the whole DeBeers marketing campaign which is rather successful.

DeBeers controls a bulk of the world market trade (or used to).

in a paraphrase... if it's not a diamond, it's not love.|||I see nothing wrong with it .. I didn't want a diamond.|||They're shallow and materialistic. That's what's wrong with them. If the person you're asking is more interested in what type of stone is in her ring rather than the initial question, then why are you even intending to marry her? Find someone who won't care if you give them a ring or not, someone who isn't concerned about the "finer" things in life.

Some women don't even want a real diamond in their ring simply for safety reasons and because it is something so small that costs so much they may be worried about ruining it or losing it.|||Nothing is wrong with it you just might want to check with your girl first. Some people really care and others don't.|||Materialism is alive and well in America...You simply must have the biggest, the best, the fastest, the newest...You must be a trend-setter in all regards...

Many people are married with no ring...A diamond ring is traditional, which is funny because most young people would rather die than be traditional in anything, but, when it comes to a diamond, well, tradition suddenly means something.

A person may not be financially able to afford a big diamond at this time...a token ring will work, a nice diamond can come weeks, months or even years down the road...When you are in love and being loved, who cares if there's a 2 pound rock on your finger...

I'm not sure but I think it was General McArthur during the second world war...who gave his wife a bag of peanuts and said, "I wish they were diamonds"....then, many years later he handed her a big diamond necklace and said, "I wish they were peanuts"...|||I agree with the person who said some people are just shallow and materialistic. One of my friends gave his fiancee a sterling silver ring in the shape of a rose, because that is her middle name and the name of her godmother. To her it didn't matter that it wasn't a diamond.

I felt the same way; my husband did give me a diamond, but I've seen many other rings that I 've liked just as well--sapphires, emeralds, aquamarine (my birthstone)... Hey, I was a Little House fan (the books), and I always thought Laura's engagment ring sounded lovely--a garnet with a pearl on either side. But that's beside the point, lol.

As for the CZ's or whatever, I don't think there's anything wrong with that, as long as you're not passing it off to your fiancee as a real diamond.|||If She wouldn't mind (which I wouldn't) then do it...|||go for it.|||I see nothing wrong with it, I hate diamonds due to DeBeers and their marketing schemes, their monopoly of the diamond market, and the whole Blood Diamonds issue. There are a lot of women who only want diamonds, and the bigger the better for them, but I disagree-my stance is that if you are truly in love, anything will work. I know that when and if I do ever get engaged, I want either a blue topaz or a citrine because they both look good on me, they aren't a diamond, and I don't want whoever proposes to me to spend two month's salary on a ring when a good enough ring can be bought for less and the money could go towards the wedding.

Heck, I got myself a blue topaz ring a few weeks ago that would be the ideal engagement ring for me.|||Sorry, it has to be a real diamond. Or you could have another gemstone instead and have it replaced with a diamond later on down the road when you have more money.|||If you don't give her a Diamond you will look cheap!!!So go buy her a diamond... THE BIGGER THE BETTER!!!LOL...

How does diamond blade compare to stone blade for paving slabs?

I have a small angle grinder and used several disks and then burned it out trying to cut a 50mm concrete paving slab, using stone cutting disks.

Is a diamond blade better at cutting paving slabs?|||There are many types of diamond blade, of which stone blades are one. Some blades are designed to cut tiles - these have a continuous circular edge. Some are for concrete and stone - these have narrow notches around the edge, and some are for asphalt - these have wider notches around the edge. If you were using a proper stone blade to cut concrete then it would have burned out only because the diamonds had worn off ( this can happen without the blade looking visibly much different) or your grinder was too small. Most people would only cut 50mm paving slabs with a bigger 9" grinder or a petrol disc cutter which uses 12" blades. Those slabs are made out of strong concrete.|||Diamond blades are better because they stay the same size. Composite stone cutting discs wear away and the cut gets shallower.

If you are doing a lot of this work it's worth buying, borrowing or hiring a tool that can be used wet as it cuts quicker and stops the dust.|||Yes, the rough "stone" blades are designed to cut metal. To cut stone, you need a diamond blade.|||well diamond is indestructible and could easily cut through rocks so i suggest you should choose the diamond cutter.|||yes. the diamond blade will last much longer and cut faster and cleaner.

How much would it cost to get my diamond reset?

My fiance chose a white gold setting, despite my preference for yellow gold. I would like to get my 0.83 round diamond reset in a yellow gold band with platinum prongs (4). What is the best way to value a diamond myself, not using a jeweler?

I am looking at buying a diamond for my girlfriend (engagement ring). I don't want to spend way to much, and have a decent amount saved (5 digits) for this purpose but want to make sure i'm not paying too much. Anyone have any advice?|||The best place to look at value of diamonds would be http://www.pricescope.com. They have a price list from places you can buy on line for a reasonable amount. Wow! You are spending a lot on the ring, but she must be very very special! Whiteflash.com will ship your diamond to an independent appraiser if you want to have someone professional not affiliated with a jewelery store evaluate the diamond. They do this all the time. You can also get a letter of verification from them which will enable you to buy insurance as well. I recommend you go through Jeweler鈥檚 Mutual or Chubb - these places specialize in insuring jewelry.

Good luck!|||Make sure any diamond you look at has a GIA certificate. I wouldn't make an investment without one. Then shop around at a couple of stores and compare diamonds with a similar color, clarity and carat.

Other than an actual appraisal this is a good way to get an idea how much stores are marking up bc GIA grading is the same across the board.

Good luck!!|||Go to the pawn shops and ask lots of questions. They will school you in what is valuable. Then if you are lucky you will actually find a ring at one of them that you can get for half of what a jewelry store would charge, and they will usually size it for your at no charge. If anyone asks where you got the ring just say you have a friend who is a jeweler on the side and this is from his personal collection.|||If you're going to spend five digits on a diamond and it's for such an important purpose, why not have it properly appraised? Exactly how long does it take to turn diamond into graphite?

Diamond is less stable than graphite, so it'll spontaneously turn into graphite, although it takes a long long longgg time. But exactly how long (in years)? Where is the best place to sell diamond earrings?

I am trying to rid myself of a pair of relatively expensive diamond earrings, that were given to me from an ex. I don't particularly care for diamonds, given the nature of the politics surrounding the diamond industry. I would prefer not to sell them via ebay. I was hoping someone could provide information as to where I might sell them, otherwise. I appreciate any assistant anyone can provide. I would like to do so in the Los Angeles area. Thanks again!|||ebay.com|||hmm.. i'm not sure.. maybe you can find some place that sells diamonds and you can sell it to the people who own that place but.. that sounds quite impossible. even tho you don't want to sell it on ebay, that may be your only choice.|||pawn shop

How much would it cost to transfer a 1.5 carat diamond from a yellow gold ring to a white gold ring?

Hello - I have yet to get this ring appraised but I want to transfer the diamond (if possible) from the yellow gold ring to a white gold ring. Would the yellow gold have any trade-in value to the white gold ring? Can they even transfer the diamond? I'm obviously clueless when it comes to jewelry. This is for an engagement ring.|||If you are going to have 18ct white gold, then an average weight for a ring with a 1.5 ct diamond is going to be about 5 to 8 grams for an engagement type ring.

A cost of about 65 to 85 dollars per gram would be average.

Your old ring if it was 18 ct yellow gold would have a scrap value of about $25 per gram, if the stone can be removed without damaging the ring and the ring is a nice style them a manufacturer might allow a little more as a trade in, (I would).

If you are dealing with an upmarket jeweler you could double the making cost. Alas white and yellow gold are not the same price, because Platinum and or Palladium (both of which are far more expensive than the silver and copper and zinc which are used to alloy yellow gold)could be used to alloy the gold white and also a little greater difficulty in working with it.

If you are coming to Australia contact me and I would give you a good quote.

Search out a good manufacturing jeweler, they are normally found away from the street front or main shopping mall. look in the yellow pages, and shop around. Get a jeweler who will do the work rather than farm it out to others.

I hope she says Yes.|||The jeweler will transfer it for free, if you buy the new ring from them. But the rings themselves (without the diamond) are very inexpensive; a typical gold ring (white or yellow) would cost less than $100. Most better jewlers don't get involved in "trade in," but you can always sell the old ring seperately, on ebay or at any of the 1,000 places that buy gold. It'll be worth less than half the jewlery store price.|||There would be a trade in value, depending on the quality of the ring they may just use it for the metal. White gold engagement rings generally start at around $250 and go up from there. Remember that white gold and yellow gold are the same thing in the eyes of a jeweler, meaning it costs about the same.

If diamond has a gouge in the table near the prong and a deep scratch near that, will it break?

Just bought a beautiful champagne diamond ring and every stone has at least a scratch, but one stone in particular has a Y-shaped scratch with a gouge just touching it - and is just about touching one of the prongs holding it. To the naked eye the ring is gorgeous, but concerned that one diamond in particular will break, especially if accidently hit against something. I would appreciate feedback concerning the durability of the damaged diamond and overall value of the ring. Thanks!|||Depends on the overall clarity of the damaged stone. If it has a decent internal clarity, then you are in less danger of breaking the stone. That said, you should definitely be even more careful with this ring then you may others without the damage - don't wear it to bed, don't wear it while washing your hands, doing housework.. don't expose it to abrasive liquids or solids, no acids (like lemon juice), and I wouldn't recommend using a sonic cleaner on it either... essentially, just wear it when you're going out somewhere, and store it safely in a jewelry box when not on your finger.

As for the value... obviously, with the severity of the scratches, it's worth less then an undamaged ring - but without some other details, like color, actual clarity, carat weight, # of stones, etc, there is no way for anyone to give you even a ballpark $ value...|||"Do Diamonds Break" - http://www.seaofdiamonds.biz/d鈥?/a>

How much does it cost to have a diamond reset?

My mom's diamond on her wedding ring fell out of its setting and i would like to have it reset as her anniversary present. Does anyone know how much it would cost to put it back in its setting?|||It really depends, but I would check with a local jeweler. General setting costs can run you from $75.00 to $200.00. Make sure that your diamond is insured before you have it reset. The jeweler is not liable to take responsibility for the diamond in case they chip the diamond during the setting process 鈥?Here is a link to Jeweler鈥檚 Mutual who specializes in insuring only precious gems, diamonds and jewelry http://www.whiteflash.com/info/insurance鈥?/a>

Good Luck!|||It won't cost you too much, around $ 50. the jeweler will reset it by putting the stone under the claws of the setting or something like this. This could be done within 1 hours.|||Most likely less than $100:) Same thing happened with my mom's and Mucklows is only charging her like $40 for reseting it:) resetting|||great, I suggestion you to visit shop, you can see it in person.

How much can I get for a diamond ring with names carved inside?

I once bought a golden/silver ring with a diamond in it, worth 400 euros.

The thing is, there are names carved on the inside. How much can I still get for it? Which parts of the ring will the jeweler re-use? Or just the diamond?

In case he can only use the diamond, can I ask him to give me the gold and silver back?|||There are a lot of things in consideration when it comes to jewelry. The price you paid and the estimated insurance value are of no relevance when you are trying to sell it. The band will be melted down and used for other jewelry if it is real gold. The weight and the percentage of gold to alloy makes a difference on the band's value. 10k gold is not as valuable as 14k or 18k. It should be stamped inside the band in tiny characters. The diamond may be worth a lot or nothing, depending on the weight, the cut and the quality. Even a large diamond can be pretty worthless if it is full of inclusions (flecks of carbon) or cracks. Certain cuts are prized more than others. Round is the most popular cut. Also, how much "fire" does the diamond have. Fire refers to how much it sparkles and refracts light. So you need to get a good appraisal and the price they end up quoting will be the insurance replacement value. You could probably expect to get half of that if you sell it retail. If the ring has names inside, it may be an antique and if so, may be worth more. Like I said, so many things to factor in. In the end, the ring is worth what someone is willing to pay you for it.|||What weight is the ring, is it 10K 14K? or gold filled. Right now pure gold is at a all time high, They may just want to buy the band from you depending on the weight and the size of the diamond.|||In know this doesn鈥檛 sound like much but the jeweler may give you 10 cents on the dollar for the diamond depending on what quality that diamond is and this is a stretch. He/she can give you scrap value on the gold 鈥?this can range form 15.00 to 35.00. You can try to sell the ring on EBAY or Craigslist and you may get more back than from your jeweler.

Good luck!

My girlfriend has stated that she loves her grandmas engagement ring, but I know she wants a white gold band instead. I wanted to know how much it would cost to have the diamond on her grandmas ring taken off and placed onto a new, white gold band. Thanks!|||Prices can vary depending on how complicated of setting you want it in. I would take it to a few different jewelers and price out different options. But honestly if she loves her grandma's ring and you take the diamonds out and put it into a new ring it's not really her grandma's ring anymore. If she wants a white gold band. I would invest your money into a new ring.|||About $50.

What would be the most efficient way to find a lost diamond in the remains of a burnt house?

Months back a couple of very close friends of mine lost everything they owned when their house burnt to the ground. All the remains have piled in the basement. Since they have had to move and don't have the time, they asked me to clean it up. I've cleared out almost all the big metal. Mainly what is left is a basement that has ashes about two feet deep and much broken and melted glass. They have offered me a reward if I can find a diamond that was in there, almost 3/4 carat. I have a good idea of approximately what area it is probably in. But how can I efficiently sift through all that ash and broken and melted glass to find it? I was told that diamonds show up well under a blacklight, but they couldn't even tell me what color they appear under a blacklight. And a lot of that glass shows up well too. Is there any way I can do this task with some sort of ease? How can I find out if what appears to be a diamond really is a diamond?

Besides the cutting glass what other ways are there of finding out if indeed it is a diamond before having to ask a jeweler.|||Real diamonds refract so much light that if you place it over print you wont be able to use it as a magnifying glass.Looking closely at the specks, ridges, and facets can also give you a clue into the identity of your gem. Diamonds do have inclusions, tiny bits of other minerals that got crushed into the diamond while it formed deep under the earth. However, if the facets have worn or rounded edges, bubbles, or if the gem looks rippled or pitted, it is probably glass. Those gems that are perfectly clear, with absolutely no inclusions, are probably quartz. Also normally diamonds conduct heat so breath on it and if there is no moisture or condensation on it chances are it may be real.|||Just make sure it isn't a blood diamond. well try using that diamond to cut another diamond. if it works it's real|||a real diamond will cut glass|||MAIL IT TO ME AND IF ITS FAKE YOU'LL RECEIVE IT BACK!!!!|||There are numerous materials that are clear and harder than glass. What is the speed of light in a diamond that has an index of refraction of 2.3927?

What is the speed of light in a diamond that has an index of refraction of 2.3927?|||Recall that the speed of light in a substance is equal to the speed of light in a vacuum (3 x 10^8 m/s) divided by the refractive index of the substance.

So, speed of light in diamond = (3 x 10^8 m/s)/2.3927 = 1.25 x 10^8 m/s.

What is a diamond parcel or parcel of diamonds?

I am looking at loose diamonds for a friends engangement ring. I keep coming accross listings for diamond parcels? Does that mean a group of diamonds or is it one stone?|||A parcel of diamonds is exactly what it means. Basically a package of diamonds. When people are selling by the parcel they are selling diamonds in bulk. However, because of the high costs of diamonds and the fact that they're small, bulk doesn't mean pounds of the stuff, but maybe 50+ or 100+ carats of it. Diamonds that are sold by the parcel tend to be smaller. For example melees (small diamonds), or if they're larger sizes then they're usually commercial quality. But even the larger sizes are not commonly over 1.00 ct each in a parcel. You might find a parcel of 20 pointers which is 1/5 of a carat each. In your case they're most likely hundreds if not thousands of small diamonds (a few points each) totalling a large sum of carats.

Where and when is it appropriate to wear diamond stud earrings?

For example,

Are they fancy enough for attending weddings? Or would something like diamond chandelier earrings be more appropriate?

Do people wear them for routine stuff like going to the cinema or when they're out shopping?|||Diamond stud earrings are very versatile. Depending on their size, they can be worn anywhere. They are fancy enough to be worn to weddings, and can be casual enough to wear out shopping. It's really what's worn with them that would make them either too dressy or casual. If they're really small ones, you could literally wear them anywhere.. even camping, hiking, etc. (large studs might look a bit silly in those situations though).|||I wear my diamond studs every day, unless I feel like putting on some dangley ones or if I have a pair to match a specific outfit. What is the best way to clean diamond rings?

I have just aquired a new diamond/sapphire ring and would like to keep it sparkling , how can I do this ?|||you can do following to keep your rings:

1. never swimming and take shower with the ring. because the chemicals from water will damage the ring.

2. never clean the ring with toilet paper or any kind of paper. u need a soft leather to clean it if it is needed.

3. if it is dirty, you could put it into a bowl of water , drop a drop of detergent into water. mixed. put the ring inside for 15 to 30 minutes. use a soft brush to brush it. then clean it with clean water. take it out and put it on a pc of toilet paper and let it dry by itself.

4. if there is scratch on the ring, there is no other way, bring it to a jeweler and they have to polish the pc and re-plate it.

i m a jeweler from china. u r welcome to contact me if u have any questions about jewelry.|||Hello,

1 Polish the ring with a clean cloth. This removes any dirt and oil that has built up while you have been wearing it.

2 Place the sapphire ring on top of a towel. Use a commercial fine jewelry cleaner to begin scrubbing the ring. These cleaners typically come with a soft bristled brush that you can use.

3 Clean the entire ring thoroughly. Scrub the prong area, the inside and the outside of the band.

4 Fill a bowl with lukewarm water. Submerge the ring in the water for several minutes to remove all dirt and soap residue.

5 Dry the ring with a soft towel. Return the ring to your finger or place in a cool, dry area for storage.

6 Wash the jewelry cleaner brush. You want to clean the brush before you replace the brush into the cleaning solution.

How much could I get for a diamond necklace?

I can't pay to go have it appraised so I am looking on here for ideas. It is a 1/2 karat stone set in a 14kt gold necklace. Not sure of the quality of the diamond however I can't see any major flaws in it like cracks or discoloration, I am also not an experienced jeweler.|||Diamonds vary greatly in value depending on their clarity, cut and color.

What's the difference between Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl?

I am getting close to finishing Pokemon Pearl (I think I am becoming a fangirl) and wanted to know if it was worth it to get Pokemon Diamond for the DS? Are the story lines the same? Are there only a few tweaks? Are they completely different? Thanks!|||pokemon diamond and pokemon pearl are based on a common storyline, and the only difference is in getting hands on a certain set of pkmn. some like diaga are diamond exclusives, while another some like palkia are pearl exclusives. so definitely, getting a somewhat carbon copy of another game, especially if you dont get it for free, as a gift or something, is not at all worthy.

if you liked the sinnoh adventure and need some change in pace, go for pokemon platinum, which too i wont recommend much.

if you really need something new and different, pokemon heartgold or soulsilver is the best for you, right now in english.

pokemon black and white, an entirely new series, has made its debut in japan and will hit the u.s only next year.|||i finished pearl a while back then played my friends diamond game. they were exactly the same except for different pokemon. its not worth getting it.|||The story lines are extremely similar. Only difference is catching dialga/palkia really in the storyline

No, it's not worth getting Diamond as well, only differences is the mail legendaries and a few other catchable pokemon and fossils.

Get Platinum, you can get both Dialga AND Palkia, there's the Dimension world AND the Battle Fronteir|||Storyline very smilar but pokemon are different and no its not worth gettin diamond but get platinum its more worth getting platinum|||The only thing is the legendarys are different in Diamond you get Dialga and in Pearl you get Palkia. But there are some normal pokemon you can only catch in one of the games. Misdreavous can only be found in the wild in Pokemon Pearl for instance.|||Maybe if you went here. This tells you so much differences in the Games... I guess not so much but anyways here is the site.

You better get yourself a wifi and finish you pokedex , or maybe you buy pokemon soul silver or heart gold?|||I would not get diamond because the story line is the same, There are a couple different Pokemon such as you can get dialga instead of Palkia and Cranidos instead of Sheildon. They are very similar. I wouldn't get Diamond after you have finished pearl but there is many other fun Pokemon games that have different plots. Hope I helped|||The storylines are the same, but there are certain pokemon that only appear in Pokemon Diamond, plus you get the legendary pokemon Dialga in Diamond. You can't get that in Pearl. I suggest you get it if you want to complete your Pokedex.

Woo! I'm a fangirl too ^-^ except i've been one since i was like 6.|||There is one major difference between Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. In Diamond the Main Legendary is Dialga and in Pearl the main Legendary is Palkia. Also some pokemon in Pearl you can't get in Diamond and some pokemon in Diamond you can't get in Pearl. So basically, the main legendaries are the only difference in the storyline.

What does it cost to have a diamond put back in a ring?

My diamond fell out of my engagement ring, I managed to find it. Does anyone know how much it will cost to have it put back in? It is a princess cut solitaire, I am unsure of the size.|||If you purchased your ring from a reputable place then they should repair it for free. I would approach your jeweler and ask him if he can repair it before you go to another place and pay.|||It shouldn't cost more than $100. Many online retailers offer diamond replacement as a service. You just send the ring and diamond to them, they replace it, and then send it back. This just happened to my friend a few months ago. I believe she used this site to help her: http://www.danforthdiamond.com|||The cost will also depend upon whether or not you get more prongs added to your setting. If it fell out, you may want to consider it. The jeweler will give you a price upon examining the ring.|||it dosent coast much, about 100-200 max, depending on the diamond and the ring|||My cousin had that happen and it really depends on where you went..

Is Diamond Head in Hawaii fit for the disabled and elderly?

What is the average Diamond Carrot size for an engagement ring?

Im looking int engagement rings and i have no idea what im looking for. We have talked and she wants something that is simple and elegant so im going with a white gold band with a single diamond. But what size diamond? I guess what im getting at is what is the average carrot size for an engagement ring?|||It's really impossible to answer this. Not just because everyone has different tastes, but because any "averages" you might be able to hunt up will be provided by industry organizations. That means the jewelry stores that belong to the organizations will have reported the sizes of what they market as engagement rings, and then the organization will have spit out the mean like it, well, means something.

But it doesn't. Because not only is a mean really useless (you can have a lot of small diamonds averaged in with a few whoppers and get a really inaccurate picture from that), but the "average" itself won't take into account a whole, whole lot of engagement rings that aren't sold as such.

Say the jewelry store has their expensive diamond rings labeled "engagement rings" and their less expensive rings labeled "promise rings." Maybe they sell more promise rings than anything else, and maybe they sell those promise rings to men intending to propose with them. But those rings won't be averaged into the mean, because the industry organization only wants to hear about the "engagement" rings.

Why is this? Why, to skew the mean figure upward and make you think you're supposed to be buying a larger diamond than most people really buy.

The best thing to do is to ask your girlfriend to show you some pictures of rings she likes. Then you'll get an idea of the kind of stone she wants and how large she's hoping it will be. And if it's doable, great. If it's not, you guys can have a talk and try to merge her expectations with your financial reality.|||The size of the carat is not the only thing that matters when purchasing a diamond. Cut, clarity and color play just as big a factor. You can get a 2 carat diamond for dirt cheap, but it will be yellowed in color, have visible marks with the naked eye etc. The size of a diamond for a solitaire ring which is what your girlfriend seems to be interested in is also going to range depending on where you live. From state to state it jumps from 1/4 carat to 1 carat because of the average income in those areas. Less wealthy areas are of course going to have smaller lower cost and quality diamonds. I would say your best bet is to go to a local jeweler, avoid a chain store if possible because they do charge more for lower quality and actually look at the rings themselves. I've seen diamonds that were 2/3 carat cut to look as though they are much larger and 2 carat diamonds that were badly mounted and looked very small. Quality is really what matters the most and a good jeweler will take the time to really show you and teach you about diamonds. Most women would be happier with a smaller but high quality diamond then a large poor quality one. Oh and its carat not carrot hun, which is why some idiot made the comment before mine. Good luck!|||I have no idea what your budget is. I think you should ignore what the "average" is and focus on what you can afford. Besides, the average really does depend on where you are. I have a smaller than average ring for San Francisco (where I live), but larger than average ring for Arkansas (where I'm from). But, either way - I love it, it's classic, and we did not go into debt to buy it!

I really like this ring:

it needs to be something that fits her personality and that she can wear every day

talk to her closest friends and family...they're the most likely to know what she'd like

and remember quality is more important to MOST of us than size - i'd much rather have a clean shiny smaller stone than a big rock with tons of carbon in it|||Most people are focused on the carat weight. Look at the cut first. With a Whiteflash A Cut Above Super Ideal H%26amp;A diamond you will have excellent light performance where your diamond will be brilliant under most diffused lighting conditions. You can go for a little less in carat weight for your finger size and focus in on the perfect cut. The average ct weight is .5 - 1.2

Good Luck!|||average is probably around 1/2 to 3/4 carat overall, however there are some areas where salaries tend to be higher (like NYC) where the average carat size is probably higher because buyers can afford a larger ring.

Where I live now, in Central Pennsylvania, most women have under 1 carat. When I lived just outside of New York, the women tended to have 1 to 2 carat stones.|||Carat, not carrot (that's what rabbits eat).

How to apply a diamond coating?

In my chemistry textbook it says there is a way to apply a ultra-strong diamond coating to any surface. It says all you need to do is get some hydrogen (h2) and methane (CH4) and mix it together, dip the thing you want to coat in the mixture, then use a microwave-like energy source, and the result is a thin diamond coating. Any help, tips, or ideas?|||I've not heard about making diamond coatings using methane and hydrogen.

Applying a diamond coating to all sorts of everyday objects is certainly a good idea. The reason we can't go out and buy diamond-coated hockey sticks or shovels or knives or other items is cost. Not because the raw materials are particularly expensive, the process to do it is tricky. The techniques for applying diamond coatings generally involve very high pressures, or very high temperatures, around 1000 deg C (or both). That's hot enough to make your hockey stick spontaneously combust.

It wouldn't surprise me to see such coatings appear on more everyday objects in the next 15-20 years, as the technology becomes cheaper.

What diamond engagement ring resembles the Whitehall White Star ring?

My girlfriend loved the Whitehall White star ring but now that store has goen bankrupt and they are no longer available. Are there any other rings that resemble that one? It had a small diamond mounted in the band under the solitaire so when you look at the side you can see it. Thanks for all the help.|||Do you have a picture or link?

My understanding is that a Whitehall white star diamond is simply a branded diamond with more facets than the typical Princess or Round Brilliant cut. Kay and Jared Jewelers sells their "Leo" diamond (with more facets) which is probably similar. Personally, I would never buy a diamond from Kay, Jared, or any other mall store. You probably dodged a bullet with Whitehall going out of business - you likely would have gotten ripped off with a low-clarity fad diamond with an EGL certification.

When you do buy, make sure your diamond has a AGS or GIA certification - these certification labs have the best reputation. Look for "ideal" or "excellent" cut! You can add 100 extra facets to a diamond, but it won't sparkle in all light environments unless the actual proportions are perfect - that's why you want AGS Ideal or GIA Excellent cut grades.

Are you looking for a Round or Princess cut? And basically, you're looking for a setting with a surprise stone, right? A setting with a surprise diamond can be found almost anywhere.

Here's an incredibly overpriced, low quality ring from Jared with a surprise diamond on the side (see images): http://www.jared.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s鈥?/a>

Here's a reasonably priced setting from Whiteflash with a surprise stone (see enlarged image): http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rin鈥?/a>

3. What types of costs are they incurring just by being open (Think rent for a store in Hollywood vs a small town)

Im sure there are more, but these are off the top of my head.

When a store sells you a ring, or necklace, they need to make sure the price covers their cost to buy it, then their costs to have a location for you to buy it, advertising to make you come in... etc... Then certain stores get the luxury of raising the price some more because they are 'special' (again think Tiffany's).

Is a 1 carat diamond of H SI1 quality from Tiffany and co. any better than a 1 carat H SI1 diamond from your local jeweller?

Absolutely NOT!

The quality of the gold, the quality of the gem/diamond is the same not matter which brand it is under.

The price of jewellery at store is inflated for profit, and profit alone.

@RocksDiamondDeals|||My partner is getting my ring custom made from a local boutique jeweller. She buys her diamonds direct then makes the ring, so she is substancially cheaper than any store we have seen!

In fact we are getting a ring for $5000 with a very intricate band, that we have seen in stores for $10 000 with a plain band. I reckon if this ring was in stores it would retail for $10,000-$15,000 depending on the store.

Is diamond earrings to much for a 1 year anniversary?

I was planning to buy my girlfriend diamond earrings for our 1 year anniversary spending between 400-600. I was wondering if that would be to much to do since I already did buy her a necklace and bracelet for previous occassions. To much in the sense of spoiling her and by the way what size should would look good on her 1/3 or 1/2 t.w for a 5'4 height 110 lb person.|||I think the question is what if you break up? Is it common to set a diamond in an engagement right that sits above the halo?

I have a family diamond that is 1.24 ct. The engagement ring has a setting that is made for a 1 ct diamond. I spoke with the jeweler and they said that the diamond will sit a little above the halo. Is this common?|||Quite common. I think most stones in halos are set above the halo rather than flush with it. How to photograph a diamond ring?

I want to pgotograph the diamond ring I bought for my beloved. Every picture come out blurry because the flash shines on the diamond. My cameras a kodak V1003 10 MP. Any suggestions?|||turn the flash off

a|||Get a different camera, one that can handle a macro lens like Nikon or Canon. If you want a really good picture, then use a light tent and diffused lighting with a darker backround so the diamond will stand out. You can also add a small penlight for highlights and sparkle to the edges of the diamond.|||It's going to be pretty tough to get a great picture with your camera. I have a stock answer that I post for people who want to take jewelry photos for eBay. If you read this, I think you will get the best results that you can with your camera. I have some examples taken with an SLR with a dedicated macro lens, but it would be a long shot for you to come up to that quality - which isn't even "catalog" quality.

Since you have 10 MP to play with AND a decent sized sensor, you might do better to back off from the subject and then crop out a portion of the frame to come up with the final image.

~~~~~~~~~~
For objects photographed from a distance of 3-4 feet, absolutely any digital camera and any "digital photographer" can get a suitable image. Don't forget that the largest picture eBay will display (unless you are hosting your own images) is 800 x 800 pixels or less than 1 megapixel. For jewelry or other small items, you have to learn macro technique. You can also do this with almost any digital camera, but here's an article that I wrote about jewelry in specific. I am sure that you will find it helpful.
The best way to take photos of jewelry for a web site is with a digital SLR and a macro lens. If you are not going to go with a DSLR, almost any point and shoot with a macro mode will serve you well. The thing is, I feel that you need to use the flash to force the aperture to close while still having enough light for an exposure. Many here will tell you different, but follow this advice and see what you think.
Use your macro setting and experiment. Let's say you have a point and shoot camera with macro and a flash on the camera. You might have to go to a manual mode to do this, but...
Put your item on a nice background surface. I like to just put it in a ring box or on some velour. Zoom out at least half-way so that you will be working about a foot away from the ring. Be sure that you get focus confirmation. Shoot a picture USING flash. Check the LCD for the result. If you have overexposed the item, use the EV adjustment to reduce the exposure. For small items, I often find that I need to reduce the exposure by about 1.0 EV. (That's -1.0 EV.) It is better to have the item properly exposed and the background underexposed, so just worry about the jewelry for now. Using a deliberate underexposure will cure the "too shiny" appearance of the stones and metal.
If you know how, you can use either full manual exposure or just Aperture Priority and choose a smaller aperture (larger number) to make the ring show up in better focus.
If you have a DSLR, post your question again stating the kind of camera that you have and the lens that you are using and we will give more details.
If you are doing any image processing at all, such with Photoshop or it's cousins, you can crop the image to 800 pixels by 800 pixels and use Supersize images on eBay. I always use the Picture Pack when I am selling anything of any value.
Check out http://www.members.aol.com/swf08302/hear鈥?/a> which I did a while ago using a Nikon Coolpix 5400 exactly as described above. I do NOT think this is acceptable, but we decided not to sell the ring anyhow, so I didn't bother to do a better job. It's still better than some I've seen. I don't keep old photos of sold items around, so I don't have much to show you, but at least you know that it's possible to get an acceptable result even without spending huge dollars on your equipment.
The key things to remember are:
-Macro setting
-Zoom out to get about a foot away from your subject
-Use flash
-Try different EV settings and expect that you will end up with a negative EV setting, such as -1.0 EV.
I happen to have some photos from old auctions on an FTP site. I think that these were all taken with a 3 MP Nikon Coolpix 885.
What does the set of numbers inside my diamond ring mean?
I recently purchased a diamond engagement ring from an antique dealer. There is an eight digit number along side the carat weight of the diamond preceded with a diamond emblem. Does that number mean it is a certified diamond? If so, where can I find the info for this ring?|||It could be a lab grade report number (cert number)...however I find it odd that they would inscribe it into the shank of the ring...An 8 digit number would most likely be a GIA number (Gemological Institute of America). You could contact them, give them the number, and see if they have a lab report tied to the number...I don't believe that recycle numbers, so if your diamond went through GIA, they should have a record of it.
If possible please include references or accreditation's
To break down the question more the chance of it forming at all?
the chance of it forming from carbon?
thank you for your time :)|||This isn't really a question for probability. At the right temperature and pressures and purity carbon will form diamonds 100% of the time. At any other temperature, pressure and purity it will not, 100% of the time.
If you were trying to ask what percent of carbon on the earth is is diamond form, that it still not a probability question.|||Diamonds are formed from carbon... These are formed at extremely deep levels in the earths crust when high pressure and extreme heat are subject to the carbon.
