How can I identify if a stone is a diamond?

Short of going to a jeweler how would I determine whether or not I've found a diamond. Not a raw one but an already cut diamond.|||A diamond will cut glass.|||See if it will cut glass. If it does, it is a diamond. If not, it's a fake.|||try to cut a piece of glass with it.|||Hi. Drag it across a glass surface. A diamond will scratch the glass.|||Diamonds cut glass bring a piece of glass and test it.|||if it cuts glass or by the color if you can look at and it has alot of color in it then its a rock|||Glass might be unsafe since it can crack and hurt you, BAD.

find the hardest thing you can think of at your house that cant shatter and get in your skin and scratch it. Id suggest a metal lawn tool, preferably stainless steel. Good luck!|||If its a diamond it should cut glass. Go into a pawn shop as if you want to pawn it. The guy behind the counter will look through the eye thingee that jewelers use to determine the value and quality of a stone. He will tell you if its a diamond or a cubic zirconia and there is no charge.|||diamonds are heavy for their size. this density makes them feel cold. If it is wet with water will it still stick to grease. does it sparkle brightly in sunlight and show "fire" colours in the sparkle. Is it very hard, much more than hard enough to scratch glass. Is it in the setting? Between the top and bottom is a flat band called the girdle and recently cut diamonds should have a mark here like a tattoo, you will need a magnifying glass to see it likely. If it is, good sign. If not it just might be an lder stone or from a black market supply. Most of the next tests need small but specialized enough equipment that you should take it to a gemologist. You can measure the refractive index, this is distinctive of the stone. With a good strong magnifier ( a loupe) you can look for inclusions and flaws, there should be some. you can check for fluorescence with a black light and for dichroism with a special filter(optical colours).

If you have a good hard sparkly stone much harder than glass have it checked by someone trustworthy. even if it is not a diamond it could be one of several different stones of some value. If it scratches glass with ease have it tested.

The other reason I asked about the setting is that a valuable stone will likely have a decent setting with strong prongs to hold the stone, costume jewelry and paste jewels are much less concerned about this. That is not a definite rule but is just a clue.
