Can you put a smaller diamond in a ring made for bigger diamond?

I have a ring that held a .75 carat diamond with a few smaller ones around it. The center stone fell out. I would like to know if anyone knows if there is a way to put a smaller diamond in there- it is .25 I believe. Can the prongs be replaced or is the ring useless unless we get the same sized stone?|||Your best bet is to have the prongs altered to support the smaller diamond though your ring may look odd as there is a noticeable difference between a 0.75 and 0.25.

Something to keep in mind - remember that diamond "carat" refers to the WEIGHT of the diamond and not actually the SIZE. That being said, it is possible to get a smaller diamond (probably not as small as .25 but maybe a .60) that has a shallower cut that would be the width as the existing prongs.|||Hi A,

It all depends on the ring but in most cases a good jeweller will be able to help you. Sometimes the prongs can be shortened (especially if a cone shaped setting) and the stone will sit lower on the ring but at least it may fit. The 0.75ct stone should measure approx 6mm and a 0.25ct 4mm so physically its not a massive change.

Another way to achieve what you want would be to use the existing stones and trade in your ring to have a new one made using the kept stones.

Search the "Ask the Jeweller" section on my website to see other customers similar experiences.

Good luck!

There are many factors governing the quality and price of the ornaments. It differs from metal to metal.

Diamond has a unique characteristic of reflecting light by total internal multiple reflection. The cut and finish decides the quality of the diamond. I am also that much aware about these specifications. Please go through online. You will get a number of sites providing valuable information. Recently I searched

Raga|||you cannot use the same prongs, however some rings you can remove the prongs and put in a new head with ruining the ring, if you post a picture i can tell you for sure.|||i don't think so, it depends what width the stone is but by the sounds of it the new diamond is quite alot smaller
