A defect in a diamond appears to be 2 mm below the surface when viewed from directly above that surface. How far beneath the surface is the defect?|||Apparent distance/actual distance = N2/N1. Thus depth of defect = 2 mm * N1/N2. N1 (air) = 1. Pick your favorite value of N2, index of refraction of diamond, and solve.|||Please invert both fractions. Another bad answer day.
