What size diamond earings are good for xmas without being gaudy?

My wife is a down to earth woman. She's not vain or showy. I want to buy her a nice pair of diamond studs. She gave her other pair to our daughter, because the pair that was used to pierce her ears where bothering her ears. Anyway I am currently deployed and can't tell how big or gaudy the earings are, as I will buy them online and I can't ask her because I don't want to give it away?|||Traditionally, a pair of half carat diamond studs (meaning each earring is set with a quarter-carat diamond)is considered the ideal size to give as a gift-- they're neither too small nor too flashy. Round diamond studs are the most classic and subtle, so your wife would probably like that shape the best. There are some very nice ones priced at a quarter of what you'd pay someplace like Zales here: http://debebians.com/round-diamond-stud-earrings.html|||Ok, so here's the deal. Buy as large as you can afford. I think 3/4 or 1/2 carat are nice. I have .75 each and I don't think they are gaudy at all. However, I have always thought the earrings should look similar to the wedding ring. So, if her engagement ring stone is conservative, her earrings should be also - IMO. Also remember if you shop in TCW, total carat weight, then you must divide by two to figure out the size of each stone. So a pair of 1ct TW is a 1/2 carat per stud.

Keep this in mind too - nothing is more sad than a TINY little diamond. Good luck!|||Agreed. But truth be told, it's really up to what you can afford. Big diamond studs can get super expensive! You might even want to consider white sapphire if your budget is tight. Either way, that's a very sweet gift! Good luck, I'm sure she'll love the thought behind it! :)|||IMO, under a half carat would fit the bill.
