I have heard that some have a number laser etched on the diamond which corresponds with the certificate, which is fine. Do all certificated diamonds have this? Will an EGL certified diamond have this for example?|||No, not all certified stones have laser inscriptions. And most EGL certs aren't worth the paper they're written on
Each diamond has distinct individual characteristics (feathers, cracks, inclusions, etc) which can be mapped out on an appraisal. So, before you buy a stone, ask if there is a map to go with the cert (most do) and look at the stone yourself under the scope.
Even if there is # inscribed on the stone, those can be done outside of the lab, so you still really need to check the stone yourself, if you're that concerned. However, why on earth would you give your money to a jeweler you didn't trust? Stay away from chain stores and anything in the mall... find a local, independent jeweler, someone reputable and recommended by others, before you drop a single penny
good luck!|||I personally strongly suggest that you buy ONLY diamonds which have a laser inscription. Buying a diamond is always very tricky. May I suggest taking a look at these essential tips before you buy a diamond? http://www.thediamondbuyingguide.ca/essential-tips/

|||Inscribing the report number is optional with GIA. I don't know about EGL, but with GIA you can also compare the report's diagram of inclusions with the diamond itself by using a jeweler's loupe. Unless your diamond is perfect this should help. See this: hhttp://gia4cs.gia.edu/cm/grading-reports.htm

|||No, not all certified diamonds are inscribed. EGL does do it on some diamonds as do a few other places like GIA. You can also send it toGIA and have it inscribed with whatever you want.
As far as switching a diamond with it's certificate, you might be able to identify a diamond to it's certificate through the mapping of it's inclusions or lack there of. You can also always ask to have a diamond appraised by an independant appraiser..you'll pay for this, but then you'll know for sure.
