|||Any simulant of diamond with a hardness above 6.5 - and there are quite a few - will cut glass; therefore, do not rely on this method.
Many jewelers have "diamond pens." This pen shoots a laser through the stone and reads the diamonds refractive index.

|||Generally speaking, many jewelers don't know anything about diamonds, so don't count on their visual opinion to be just. They often know how to sell what they don't know, but don't know how to tell you about what they don't know.

|||If you're buying a diamond, ask for stones that come with either a GIA, AGS, or EGL certificate.
